The Battle for the Block—And Another World: A Dispatch fom the Encuentro
A Dispatch from the First Ever Encuentro for Dignity and Against Gentrification
By Michael Gould-Wartofsky
In East Harlem, they have organized building by building to reclaim El Barrio from those who would “develop” them out of it. In Chinatown, they’ve rolled out a rent strike to win the repairs needed for tenants suffering from landlord neglect on Delancey Street. In the West Village, they’ve mobilized LGBT young people of color to stand up for their right to gather on the Christopher Street Pier. And on the Lower East Side, they’ve built a tenants’ union to defend “what is most beautiful about New York, the city that welcomed everyone…[that’s now] welcoming only money.” [Read more →]

on denial
on denialOctober 26th, 2007 by phoenix and tree

I found this image to be very powerful.
It resonates with some things I’ve been thinking about recently. Denial, and the refusal to acknowledge the reality of suffering, are so widespread and so destructive. These twin forces enable the creation and continuation of so much violence. While there are important differences between the sexual abuse with which my father ripped and polluted my psyche and the invasion and occupation of Iraq [Read more →]

Now what do you think of this? Circle Jerk!
Obama has added an openly gay minster to his tour to balance the views of noted homophobe Donnie Mc Clurkin. Obama’s advisers have also asked supporters to contact HRC and urge the group not to criticize the senator. Guess they haven’t heard the news that HRC is sinking into quicksand as far as most LGBT people are concerned. www.towleroad.com/2007/10/obama-adds-open.html. It still amuses me that anyone would put their faith in this system.

these misguided bed fellows make me sick.
Barack Obama is set to begin a three-day gospel tour with Donnie Mc Clurkin, a notorious homophobe who has vowed to battle, “the curse of homosexuality.” Do birds of a feather still flock together? www.towleroad.com/2007/10/barack-obama-to.html. [Read more →]

OH! Art OH!
Bees Swarm At Opening! Art Patrons Stampede!
San Diego-Calif.–An afternoon wine and cheese and art opening on Tuesday at the Gadtone Gallery ended abruptly and turned into a wild melee. Hundreds of bees came swarming down from the ceiling of the gallery startling patrons viewing a show entitled DANGER /ART! According to an eyewitness at the opening, patrons in their haste to get to exit doors knocked over tables of food and beverages, damaged works of art, and a women was injured when she was pushed and landed face down in Echo Vito’s sculpture, “Large White Eggs Buried In Fine White Sand,” causing massive damage to the work and ruining her cocktail dress.

LET’S ORGANIZE! THE IWW NEEDS OUR HELP!
Hey folks - this is something I’m trying to cull together in response to a call from my fellow union members in the IWW to try and raise some desperately needed funds for a vital campaign, which you can read about below. In addition to the requests I make below, I could also use some info in terms of organizing such a thing. First off, it’d be great to get a sample copy of the HIMC food donations letter we’ve used in the past. The other thing I’d like to know was how we got around selling certain refreshments. It was Probably not “Made in the U.S.A.” Anyway
When I was having my radical growing pains as a child in high school, I made it a point to cover every centimeter of my backpack with political pins. My very first one read: “homophobia is a social disease.” I thought it was poignant and hilarious. I had message t-shirts and would write messages on my hands when inspired. The bathroom walls were my canvas for rattling off all the things I thought were screwy with the world. [Read more →]

All this hair pulling, All this nail biting.
Oh, what a game. Does this game make our democracy great? This running back and forth, these sleepless nights, this nail biting and hair pulling, this rushing, this competition, this stress. It all turns my mind to anger. [Read more →]

*****I Ponder This Movement*****
Our movement is no longer a movement for real liberation. It is rather a conglomeration of corporate funded-non-profit organizations clamoring for funding, equal access to marriage, and the military, all the while assimilating as quick as possible. The larger vision of social change and liberation of humanity across all borders has vanished. [Read more →]

Unconventional Action, Call for Endorsements
There’s been a teeny bit of talk about doing a CT consulta to plan for the DNC/RNC ‘08, and I’d say there’s a decent chance of it manifesting in the winter or early spring…
In support of the call to action issued by the RNC Welcoming Committee, Unconventional Action is seeking endorsements for the strategy consensed upon at the “pReNC,” a national planning consulta a year in advance of the Republican National Convention. [Read more →]
