This event will benefit the striking and fired workers in the NYC food industry who have been struggling to raise themselves out of the sweatshop-like conditions imposed upon them because of their immigration status and desperate economic situation. What we raise between now and then will go toward things like rent, food and bills.
Some IWW members and co-workers are out on strike, others have been fired AND BLACKLISTED from the industry because the employers realize the power of this campaign. Many of these folks are undocumented and have stood up to the ever-present threat of their employers calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to have them deported. Despite this threat, the campaign has spread to a dozen restaurants and warehouses in New York City, including over a hundred IWW members and industry-wide influence that has already raised the bar. Union members have also won back-pay from management, minimum wage, overtime and humane hours.
This is a golden opportunity for all of us to strike a powerful blow for the rights of immigrants and workers in this country. The IWW is an almost completely volunteer-based union on a shoestring budget. So when we’re given something, we make it last. We need you help to make this happen. If you want to help, I guarantee that we can find something for you to do.
