New Orleans attack on NLG lawyer
The link below is to a video of a police attack on Bill Quigley, an NLG lawyer in New Orleans who has helped lead the legal battle against efforts to demolish public housing in that city. Bill has been in the forefront of legal battles on behalf of the people of New Orleans since long before Hurricane Katrina. As you can see from the video, Bill was literally doing nothing more than standing with a group of people engaged in a loud debate with public officials when a police officer grabbed him, slammed him head first against a wall and handcuffed him for “disturbing the peace.”
The City is making it clear that little things like the law won’t stand in the way of its efforts to make New Orleans a playground for well-heeled white people.

jesus christ, that is utterly amazing and clearly the video shows he was doing nada and simply attacked by Nagin’s Gestapo! the denial of any right of return to the people of the Ninth ward is horrific and the blind eye our country is taking to their struggle is so sad. Yet when three white rich folks are murdered, or Monterey catches on fire, or… the system jumps to action with aid, caring, sympathy and all the other crap from their institutionalized racist and classist systems of belief! Lord help us, or maybe Lord help them! Thanks for this and so many great posts Peter!
Peter, Thanks for this posting. I wonder where all the people are going to live? It is “cleansing” at its worse. Public housing may be bad but it is the home of people. How can a city just take away homes? Do they have other homes lined up for people to move into? The rents in New Oreleans must be sky high. Whats their motto, “Keep you fingers crossed that the poor disapear”? The response of the government to Katrina and the after math is a shame. America should be ashamed of itself for its treatment of its people. This issue should be on the lips of every one of the bozo’s who want to be president. Ask them WHY at every stop. But I guess they still don’t get it, (hartford is just as bad) that all types of people make our cities go round. Send our best to Bill a fighter for justice.
Here is a good article about the destruction of public housing in New Orleans:
