The Police and 475 Kent Ave. Williamsburg, NY

    From James Wagner

    January 27,2008

“Whatever the bureaucratic, commercial or political story which lies behind the human tragedy of New York City’s dreadful and totally irresponsible eviction of over 200 men, women, children and their pets from their homes in the darkness nine days ago on one of the coldest nights of the year, if this doesn’t radicalize New Yorkers, we deserve whatever we get.”

“But there is no acceptable outcome to this particular tale other than the quick return of these people and a proper accounting of the official malfeasance which resulted in their removal in the first place.”

American Anti-Vivisection Society

Juliet a friend of mine and a  member of ADAPT ask me if I would post about the American Anti-Vivisection Society. I said most certainly. She passed on to me a little leaflet that is a Compassionate Shopping Guide. Listed inside the guide are companies that do not test finished products, ingredients, or formulations on animals. Information about this guide and other information about the many projects that the groups works on can be found at www.aavs.org. If we want to be good stewards for the earth we must oppose testing for any reason on animals. [Read more →]

Oh how they *Love* Us, Let us count the ways!

FrownFrown

We will Repeal DADT

Cannon Fodder YES!

No repeal Of  DOMA

Marriage NO!

With friends like these—————————

“You claim that all the Democratic candidates for President are for repealing DADT but that doesn’t mean squat. Their party has been in power since 2006 and everything they’ve done is a stab in the back. They raped ENDA, refused to repeal ENDA because they’re pigheadedly opposed to same-sex marriage and conveniently let the Matthew Sheppard Hate Crimes Bill die so it wouldn’t be an issue in 2008. And let’s not forget their other stab in the back, DOMA. Nobody even bothers to ask them to repeal that. You say to move on and I agree–let’s move away form the parties of war, union busting and bigotry–the Democrats and Republicans are proven enemies.”

……Bill Perdue on the Bilerico Project, responding to/Mr. Big Dog Traiangulator:DADT’s legacy isn’t my fault.

A BIG HEARTY THANKS TO BILL PERDUE FOR ALL HIS WRITING.

Martin Luther King Day, 2008: A Day On, Not Off

One of the best ways to honor the life of Martin Luther King is simply to fight for racial and economic justice and to oppose on-going US militarism.

Whites, Blacks and Latinos use, sell and buy drugs throughout Connecticut but when it comes to incarceration for these crimes, people of color are 20 times more likely to be imprisoned! Too many lives have been destroyed by this racist system of justice. The war on drugs is a war on our communities. Take a stand today with working class black and latino families in New Haven at a rally for criminal justice reforms. (see calendar below.) [Read more →]

Another Rainbow Flag, Another Time

Thomas Müntzer with rainbow flag in Stolberg

Statue of Thomas Muntzer with a rainbow flag, Stolberg Germany

He carried a rainbow flag with a peasant’s boot on it. He sided with the peasants and with the working class. Convinced that God had willed the overthrow of the old society he promoted the establishment of a new egalitarian society which would practice the sharing of goods. Thomas Muntzer, (1489-1525) connected social revolution by the oppressed classes within his preaching of the gospel.  The rainbow flag with a peasants boot was used as the sign of a new era, hope and social change.

When fascism comes to the US, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross…

FascismThe Fascist Christian Nationalists are at it again, with House Resolution 888. I must admit I vomited after the third of the some 75 Whereas statements. As the Secular Coalition for America notes: … supporters of this resolution clearly call for a revised history of the United States as a Christian nation. And a few days ago, Huckabee was quoted as saying:

“[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it’s a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that’s what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards,”

Seems to me we are getting close to Step 1o of Naomi Wolf’s 10 steps to fascism.

Friday, Jan. 11: Rally to support Puerto Rican independence activists

I have pasted below a press release from a broad cross-section of the independence movement in Puerto Rico. They are designating this Thursday, January 10, as the date for a rally on the island to protest the grand jury subpoenas that have been issued to three young Puerto Rican activists in New York City. In response to this call, Puerto Rican and solidarity activists in several U.S. cities have announced plans for similar rallies on Friday, January 11. They recognize that the grand jury system has long been a tool to cripple the struggle for independence of the people of Puerto Rico. There also is a tremendous irony that a grand jury is being convened to investigate resistance to the U.S. military occupation of the island of Vieques, but the U.S. has never taken action to investigate or punish the FBI agents responsible for the assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Rios.

Here in Connecticut, independentistas have announced a rally at Noon on Friday, January 11, at the Hartford federal building, 450 Main Street. Please come out to show your support. [Read more →]

Calendar Compiled by People Of Faith

The 4 justice and peace actions below, seemingly disparate, are linked together by the victims’ race/ethnicity and class. Whether it’s US foreign policy, Connecticut’s proposed criminal (in)justice policies, or US capitalism’s treatment of immigrants, the people who are targeted are almost exclusively working-class Arab, African-American, and Latino.

Christians recall this week the astrologers discovery of the new-born Christ-child in Bethlehem. They found him and his parents living homeless in poverty, ignored by those in power. Soon this family would flee state violence as they escaped into Egypt without documents. Let us take time this week to stand publicly in solidarity with our sisters and brothers who are regularly forgotten and excluded and let us not stop working for justice and peace until everyone is free.
