American Anti-Vivisection Society

Juliet a friend of mine and a  member of ADAPT ask me if I would post about the American Anti-Vivisection Society. I said most certainly. She passed on to me a little leaflet that is a Compassionate Shopping Guide. Listed inside the guide are companies that do not test finished products, ingredients, or formulations on animals. Information about this guide and other information about the many projects that the groups works on can be found at www.aavs.org. If we want to be good stewards for the earth we must oppose testing for any reason on animals.

From their pamphlet:                 Who We Are

The American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) is a non-profit animal advocacy and educational organization that unequivocally opposes and works to end experiments on animals, and opposes all forms of cruelty to animals. Founded in 1883, AAVS is the oldest organization in the United States devoted to ending the use of animals in research, testing, and education. We work with students, grassroots groups, individuals, parents, educators, the media, and members of the scientific community to legally and effectively end the use of animals in science through education, advocacy, and the development of alternative methods to animal use.

Our members assist our efforts by becoming active in our campaigns, which are announced in our quarterly publication, AV Magazine, and bi-monthly newsletter, Activate For Animals. Our magazine features in-depth articles on the scientific, legislative, regulatory, and ethical problems surrounding various issues involving animals, with articles written by some of the best-known scientists and leaders in the animal protection movement. In addition, our literature collection and websites provide thorough information on various issues allowing those who care about animals to speak out against their use with an assurance of accuracy.

Thank you, Richard for this important info.

Locally, there is a group that works to shut down UConn Health Center’s use of monkeys for experimentation and Hartford Hospitals use of pigs to “teach” surgical skills. The website is below, but first a quote from their site that sums up the Animal Rights Philosophy succinctly:

“All sentient animals (human and non-) have an inherent value that exists outside of their utility to others. We recognize this value and afford these individuals the right to be treated in a manner
that is respectful of it. To act in a way that reduces animals (human and non-) to mere resources for others to exploit for food, experimentation,
clothing or entertainment is a violation of this right and it is our obligation to insure that such
exploitation does not continue.”
