Come Out to Greet Our Lesbian Sister, Angela Davis
Angela Davis will be speaking on Thursday April 24, 2008 at the Torp Theatre, Davidson Hall on the CCSU campus. COME OUT TO GREET OUR LESBIAN SISTER. Ms Davis will discuss “Are Prisons Obsolete?” which will be followed by a panel discussion by current and former Ct. policy makers and practitioners. This talk and discussion will be held at 2:00pm.
At 5:30 Ms. Davis will speak on “Race, Class and Gender Issues In American Society.” This talk will be followed by a question and answer period. Both events are free and open to the public. Free tickets are available for the 5:30 lecture by contacting Centix at 832-1989. Centix is located at the Information Desk in the Student Center.
Angela Davis is a socialist organizer and helped to found the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism which broke from the Communist Party in the 90’s. Ms. Davis does not consider herself to be a prison “reformer” but an abolitionist and refers to the United States prison system as the “prison-industrial complex.” Her solutions include abolishing prisons and addressing the class, race, and gender factors that have led to a large number of Blacks and Latinos being incarcerated. Davis also speaks out against the death penalty.
Angela Davis was associated with the Black Panther Party and SNCC in the late 60’s and 70’s. Her days in the Panther Party are well documented. In 1970 a gun that was used in an attempt to free James McClain and bring attention to the case of the Soledad Brothers was traced to Davis. She fled underground but was captured in New York City, arrested, tried and then acquitted. Angela Davis ran for Vice President on the Communist Party ticket in 1980 and 1984. This queer is proud to have worked to get her on the ballot and to vote for her and considers her to be one of the most intelligent persons in America. I would stop what I am doing and go out and work for her if she ever ran for any office again. Angela Davis came out as a lesbian in 1997 and in 2008 she was featured as the closing keynote speaker for the Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay Transgender, Ally College Conference.
She is currently Professor of History of Consciousness at the University of California. She works for racial and gender equality and for prison abolition. Davis is founder of the anti-prison grassroots organizations Critical Resistance.
Angela Davis our Lesbian sister, not announced as such in the flyer from the Ruthe Boyea Women’s Center nor on other postings about this event. Angela Davis our revolutionary lesbian sister, and a leader for justice for all.

Just called a contact for the lecture. Tickets for the public will be available on Sunday or Monday. So call Centix back then. Any trouble call Andrew Clark at 832-1871. # is at the University. Andrew will inform Centix not to tell people that it is only for students and faculty.
