No matter how one analyzes Barack Obama’s campaign, it is essential that we recognize the historic importance of an African-American man being the Democratic Party candidate and quite possibly being poised to be president of the U.S. It is also critical to recognize the deep meaning that his candidacy has for millions of people of color.
In that light, I came across the comment below from Brian Moore about the Obama candidacy that I find appalling. The claim that Obama is the Democratic Party candidate because party leaders “pandered to the black race” sounds like something coming from right-wing talk radio, not someone who claims to be a socialist.
“Plus, the Democrats have pandered to the black race thereby polarizing a country and hurting the cause against racism.”

The office of presidency is quite interesting in that it can still be regarded as a nobel and crowning achievment if a first time woman or first time African American could hold this office. Since after all its been held through-out its entire history by scoundrels and criminals. How does it any longer retain a nobel place?
I would suggest that it is not a question of nobility but of equality. In more than 200 years of the presidency - the highest office in the U.S. government - the position has never been held by a woman or a person of color or an out LGBTI person. In particular, I would argue, the failure of the Democratic Party to even be able to nominate an African-American until 2008 is a badge of shame since there have been a number of highly qualified African-American candidates who have sought the nomination.
No wonder Socialists can’t get it together(aside from ideology) and run one strong candidate. When you have the SWP candidate saying such crap amongst the good things that he says. I know that the WWP or FSP would never believe or would say such things.
Back in the day I was a supporter of Shirley Chisholm. Now she was a real candidate, talked a real talk and should have gotten the nomination. I was all over NYC for her.
