Library Fight Continues
An injunction has been filed against the closing of 2 branch libraries in Hartford.
On Monday July 14 there will be at least 2 events: A rally at 2:30 pm at Mark Twain School
in the Northend of Hartford (more info below) and an opportunity to voice protest at the
City Council meeting that evening.
Today from 4 - 6 pm, there was a rally in front of Mark Twain Library at 256 Farmington Ave
organized by the Laurel Corner Neighborhood Assoc.
By 5 pm, when i arrived, there were about 25 people, black, white, young kids and older adults.
Channel 61 was interviewing people and interviewed a young child surrounded by other
children.
We marched in a picket line in front of the library (which had officially closed for good at 5 pm.)
We chanted, “1-2-3-4, Open up the library doors, 5-6-7-8, Stop the cuts, Educate”;
“Money for libraries and education, Not for war and occupation”
“Open the libraries, Close the Prisons.”
Signatures on petitions were collected with signors including attendees, passers-by and even
drivers in cars stopped at the light on the corner of Farmington and Laurel.
Socialists and Queers were well represented, as is our custom.
Several of the young children took turns carrying the big Stars & Queer Stripes rainbow flag!
At the end of the rally, someone hung a poster on the window of the library that reads:
“Libraries are Cheaper Than Prisons!”

Thanks for posting this and going out to the picket line. Glad to hear both the Socialists and Queers were out and about as should be and as always.
Kerri over at Real Hartford has a good posting on the closing of the 2 branches. Posted as “Unreal” on July 2, 2008. As I said over there how are the kids going to get on the buses and go downtown or down to the Albany branch. This just may cause more problems than its worth. Something is really smelly in all of this.
