Voters for Peace News.
The enormity of the economic crisis has gotten the attention of the media and candidates while the wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan rage on. There were many reasons to end these conflicts and bring the troops home, now we can no longer afford it. The U.S. economy has serious problems that shake it to its foundation. The economy cannot be given the attention it needs unless we end these wars and invest in America.
This afternoon I’m meeting with a coalition of peace groups to plan our strategy for after the election. If you have thoughts on that, please feel free to share them with me. (http://us.mc813.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=KZeese@earthlink.net). We believe the next administration, no matter who is elected, is going to need persistent pressure to really end the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. These quagmire-conflicts are undermining those countries as well as our own.
In a few minutes I will be getting on a conference call with a coalition of groups to focus on the new economy that will be developed in the ruins of the current economic mess that Wall Street and corporate-government have created. We would love to get your thoughts on the future economy. We have a brief three question survey that I hope you will respond to. Click here to see it and respond.
Our democracy project, TrueVote.US, is tracking the election news around the country. Early voting, covering one-third of U.S. voters, seems to be resulting in record turnouts - that’s the good news. The bad news is we are seeing election machines faltering in many parts of the country. Perhaps most disturbing is “vote flipping” in West Virginia. In multiple counties voters have reported problems voting on the touch screen systems and some have reported seeing their vote for Obama switch to McCain. Thousands of True Vote advocates are taking action urging West Virginia officials to remove machines that demonstrate problems. You can join them by clicking here.
There is a lot going on but let’s make sure the candidates don’t forget that Americans want the war ended in Iraq. You can send them a reminder here.
Sincerely,
Kevin Zeese, Executive Director, Voters for Peace.
