Music for a Multi-Issue People/Movement

Come Out” is a piece of music written in 1966 by composer Steve Reich. This piece was written and performed at a benefit for the retrial of the “Harlem Six”, six black youths arrested for committing murder during the 1964 Harlem Riots for which only one of the six was responsible. For more info on this amazing piece see here. The Choreography Dance was added in 1982 by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Michele Anne De May. Check out more of Reich’s music exp. “Clapping Musicfound on you tube, which is an attempt to write a piece of music requiring nothing more then the human body.

Featured Film at Gay and Lesbian Film Festival!

LMF Press Release:

Marriage Makes a Word of Difference

Is a featured film at the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

Saturday, May 31st at 3pm

Cinestudio, Trinity College, 300 Summit Street, Hartford.

Marriage Makes A Word of Difference, which portrays the personal struggles and political challenges of Connecticut’s same-sex couples and their families who are fighting for the freedom to marry. Many of these loving couples have been in committed relationships for more than a decade, but despite their dedication to each other , they continue to be denied the respect, dignity, and legal protections that marriage provides. Through compelling interviews and archival and “slice of life” footage, Marriage Makes a Word of Difference celebrates our common humanity and shows why marriage equality is a fundamental civil right.

The Film Festival runs May 30 through June 7th. Check out QWB posting ***OUT Films*** for more details.

The Internationale

by Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg complained to Pete Seeger that the traditional lyrics to the Internationale were somewhat dated. Pete Seeger said: “why don’t you write new ones?” So Billy Bragg did. For May Day 2008 Queers Without Borders sends out to all of you this wonderful version of the Internationale. The original Internationale was first written and sung after the brutal suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871. This rallying cry sings out loud and clear for all exploited and oppressed people of the world to rise up and overthrow their masters.

This time its all in my mind. But let me know if you perform this piece.

Years ago, in 1972, this piece was first performed. I lived in Davenport Iowa at that time. Most people would say “I am all ears, what pray do tell were you doing living in the land of pigs and corn.” Well the reason I was there was simply because I stopped off in Davenport on one of my travels around the country. I had heard that it was in Davenport that the Mississippi River flowed east to west rather than north to south. One of those little geographical quirks that an artist of my nature just loved. I went to quite a number of these types of places in my travelling days. Once stopping my start from going else where I got a nice little 3rd floor flat and went to work doing window design for a major department store. It was there that I met a young artist named Petal who was as white as a Full Sail Tea rose, pure as a ivory flake, and as fancy as a virgin’s bridal gown. Petal and I did many fine art pieces together all around the town. We were so very much in love. This piece was performed from the 3rd floor back porch on 3rd Street on a day very much like today. I bring it out once again as I have over the years for my enjoyment and for others amusement. Since I now live in a modern apartment with no back porch and no clothes line I work it up and out in my mind. I hope that you can do the same. [Read more →]

Auditions for Dancers and Puppeteers for “FIRE”

One of my favorite Hartford Artists Anne Cubberly will be once again working with fashion designer Dan Blow on a new production “FIRE”. The fantasy is directed by Katie Stevenson-Noller and will be danced by the Full Force Dance Theater with live music composed and performed by Dan Blow.

Auditions will be held Saturday March 1, from 1 to 4 pm at the Hartford Courant Arts Center, Dance Studios of The Hartt School, located at 224 Farmington Ave, Hartford. Use the Niles Street entrance. According to the press release, “FIRE” is equal parts puppet pageant, dance concert, and drag-tacular, while still a wholesome family show.”

Anne Cubberly specializes in group performance, mask-making, giant puppets, sculptural paper mache’, and creating kinetic sculpture or automata from recycle materials. Anne’s puppets have been featured at TBLG PRIDE over the years and have always been a big hit.

The performance of “FIRE” will be held May 2, 3, and 4 at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, in downtown Hartford.

QWB Flyers

So I’ve had this design floating around in my head for awhile, and I got the old layout-fever tonightTongue out. I really love to cut, paste, juxtapose, nudge, stretch, preview, adjust and touch-up flyers.

So, we have two slightly different versions here, and I’m open to suggestions on what to change/add. The differentiations have more to do with message clarity than content, which is the positioning of the “queers without borders” text. They’re meant to be cut in half.

First one

Second one

Be brutal.

Here’s a couple more with different logos.

This is a classic image everyone will recognize, and I like for leftists to identify with it.

And this is just because I like the flying pig. Plus, I think having it coupled with QWB gives it an interesting new dimension.

I haven’t designed any of the logos, just borrowed them from elsewhere. If anyone has any graphics they’d like to see on there let me know, or we could just go without one.

Faith of the Abomination, A Must See

T. Trist who commented on one of the postings on QWB turned us on to a very interesting site. This site is called Faith of the Abomination. From the site are these words: “Faith of the Abomination is a provocative, independent documentary film created in Austin TX about the experiences of a lesbian couple who went undercover as a heterosexual couple inside a Evangelical Organization. The film is currently in post production.” The women also have a very interesting blog site at: http://faithoftheAbomination.com. You can also link from there to see a movie preview.

Thanks again to T. Trist for bringing this important work to the attention of QWB.

From QWB:

On Saturday November 17th at 2:30 the movie “Truth and Transformations” is screened. Look for our fellow Queer Revolutionary Mattilda and prick up your ears to what she has to say. Many feel this way about marriage but we have been rolled over by the snowball of the “I do” crowd. Of course if you want to read more of Mattilda’s works just scroll down our side bar and click on Mattilda.  Once on Mattilda’s site look at her side bar and click on the movie or any of her blog works.

OH! Art OH!

Bees Swarm At Opening! Art Patrons Stampede!

San Diego-Calif.–An afternoon wine and cheese and art opening on Tuesday at the Gadtone Gallery ended abruptly and turned into a wild melee. Hundreds of bees came swarming down from the ceiling of the gallery startling patrons viewing a show entitled DANGER /ART! According to an eyewitness at the opening, patrons in their haste to get to exit doors knocked over tables of food and beverages, damaged works of art, and a women was injured when she was pushed and landed face down in Echo Vito’s sculpture, “Large White Eggs Buried In Fine White Sand,” causing massive damage to the work and ruining her cocktail dress.
