The jail vigil needs more support. Perhaps the National Guard will finally go away?
We @ TC-IMC are all pretty tired, but everyone - including our friends from out of town - are all safe and accounted for, though some still face charges. Of course, the Republicans couldn’t end their eight-year reign of state terrorism without dumping it all over our fair cities - beginning with the Friday night Convergence Center raid, the thundering Saturday raids, the Monday journalist beatdowns, the Tuesday concussion grenades, the intentional bottling up of the RATM fans on Wednesday night, and finally on Thursday night, a big stupid fracas instigated wholly by the police for no particular reason.
On Thursday night, parents across the Twin Cities are incensed that their peaceful children have been detained on totally spurious charges, fabricated to justify the concussion grenades, tear gas and pepper spray, thrown around like this state has never seen. There weren’t hordes of window-breakers, just lots of people who got stiffed on getting damn protest permits (who the hell was running that system? Sure you’ll get a medal.)

The 2008 Elections and the Prospects for Struggle
Statement by F.I.S.T (Fight Imperilism, Stand Together)
*
The election of Sen. Barack Obama as the first Black U.S. president is historic. No amount of cynicism can erase that fact.
Even more historic were the great throngs of people who stood outside in large crowds and in packed arenas, churches, bars, community centers, union halls and homes. In Chicago, hundreds of thousands flooded Grant Park. In Harlem, N.Y., thousands cheered as they watched the election results on a massive screen. After the victory was announced the crowd erupted in applause and cheers. Cars honked, children ran and yelled, “We have a Black president! We deserve this! We deserve this!” [Read more →]

Thought for this Voting Day
A thought for anyone who voted today outside of the twin parties.

Election on the front page, recession on the business page
In the days leading up to the U.S. presidential elections we have not seen the sort of massive drops in the stock market that were daily occurances in previous weeks. Some corporate media have actually begun to talk about loosening of credit. the impact of the reduction in the prime lending rate, and maybe it won’t all be so bad after all.Don’t believe it.
Take a look at the business pages. That’s the one place in the corporate media where you can expect to read the truth, or at least the truth as understood by those who continue to believe that capitalism really is the only viable economic system. [Continued at Two Good Hands]

Queers and Allies before you vote for any CT. Green, Consider this.
NO ALLIANCE WITH RIGHT WING BIGOTS!!
Riding by the house today of a person that belongs to the Green Party or a fellow traveler of that party I noticed a sign on his lawn to VOTE YES on the question, “Shall there be a Constitutional Convention to amend or revise the Constitution of the State?” Needless to say I was shocked because I always thought this man was a okay person, he hangs around with those who are considered to be hip intellectuals and with a progressive city council person, attends anti-war rallies, and so on and so on. So maybe its the neighbors sign that got placed in his yard by mistake I say to myself. If I am wrong here correct me. But Please Come on Greens its only fair to let a good number of us who would perhaps vote for you know where you stand. Are you just one more Con Con man?
I did a little research and found this on Ballotpedia.org [Read more →]

Voters for Peace News.
The enormity of the economic crisis has gotten the attention of the media and candidates while the wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan rage on. There were many reasons to end these conflicts and bring the troops home, now we can no longer afford it. The U.S. economy has serious problems that shake it to its foundation. The economy cannot be given the attention it needs unless we end these wars and invest in America. [Read more →]

Another twist on the naming and claiming game Election 09 & Jesus.
To hear this song www.everclearonline.com
Jesus Christ didn’t have blue eyes or blond hair
He looked just like all those people that you want to kill
Spin your hell into a heaven you can sell
Make it look like California with a bible belt
Jesus didn’t look like the boy next door
Unless you live in Palestine
I wonder what you mean by the golden rule
I think it is a scary play on words

Email Exchange re:Eve Ensler on Sarah Palin
Below is an email i sent in to a good friend of mine in response to eve ensler’s article about sarah palin that he had forwarded to me. i copy and pasted the original article (and a link to it) at the end of this post. my response is as follows:
I have some problems with eve ensler’s article, and with her in general.
as the woman who started vday and wrote the vagina monologues, it may seem odd at first to critique her for these things, but many have nonetheless.
first off, she thinks there’s some universal “sisterhood”, like simply because women have vaginas (this is of course also debatable from a queer/pomo-sexual perspective but id rather not get into that right now) that we have some connection. that’s called essentialism- and that is something feminism needs to move past, at least in my opinion and praxis. Obama vs. Panlin, McCain
In our continuing coverage of the elections 09- QWB received this wonderful little essay. How sad and true.
I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..
·If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic, different.’
·Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
·If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
·Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.
·Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
·Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded. [Read more →]

Build Class Unity In The Fight Against Racism!
Statement from the PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation candidates Gloria La Riva and Eugene Puryear.
Since its inception, U.S. capitalist society has been marked by extreme racism. This has been the predominant tool used by a tiny class of super-rich capitalists to keep the exploited, divided and fighting each other. That has been true since the beginning of slavery in the United States in 1607 and continued with the evolution of industrial capitalism. That system allowed the ultra-rich to grow richer and kept a section of the white workers functioning as their pawns. The aim of racism is to divide and weaken the working class, derive super-profits from the lowest paid workers and force down the wages of all workers. [Read more →]

Dispatch #3: A Tale of Twin Cities in the Age of Desperation
As more and more information surfaces here in the Twin Cities—beyond the news or more raids, mass arrests, brutality, etc—I cannot help but feel like I am taking a step back to see a more complete, more startling picture than what I had previously seen, and I know I am not alone in this.
The first revelation, ironically, was that the seemingly gargantuan forces at work to bring the streets of St. Paul to a standstill were little more than a determined core of militants, who were admirably committed but desperate enough to create a facade that victory was all but certain, in the hopes that such blind optimism would bring forth a cascade of young anarchists to flood the streets—not so dissimilar from the posture of the Weathermen when they were promoting their national action, known later as the Days of Rage. There were, however, hundreds of militants who were both tactical and disciplined in their efforts, but this could not substitute for the shortcomings of the organizational model being utilized. This is the most obvious thing that one is struck by when assessing the situation on the ground, but this simple truth is perhaps inconsequential compared to what is becoming more and more evident. The RNC: Evenings in Far-Right Bizarro World
By Steven Wishnia
September 4, 2008 | Posted in IndyBlog | Email this articleBy Steven Wishnia
Like a septic-tank explosion, the Republican National Convention had to be seen to be believed.
These people are not just mad corporate-imperial cowboys and religious fanatics obsessed with policing other people’s sex lives. In hours of prime-time TV, they offered scarcely a single idea or policy to the American people. Instead they endlessly repeated the story of John McCain’s imprisonment by the Vietnamese and slung junior-high-school insults at the Democrats. Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin — her pregnant teenage daughter and shotgun-affianced son-in-law-to-be kept safely offscreen — spoke for half an hour before she mentioned a single actual issue.
In their world, it’s unpatriotic to say the country’s in a recession. There’s no such thing as global warming. We’re winning the Iraq war. And you call someone a “community organizer” in the same sneering tones a sexually insecure seventh-grade boy would use to say “interior decorator.”

ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjyvkR0bGQ
Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfully detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman’s crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Dispatch #2: From Beijing to the Twin Cities, a Battle of Narratives Between the People and the State
If you’ve been following the news at http://twincities.indymedia.org you’ll know that the various forces of the state here are doing everything in their power to intimidate and eliminate all threats, real and perceived. While they may or may not take us seriously as a legitimate threat to the smooth-flow of the theatrics inside, it is obvious that we are a clear and present danger to maintaining their dominant narrative in the public eye. The cold and calculating targeting of independent media with harassment, detention, seizure of property, etc., make it all too clear that any journalist that is not “on message” is persona non grata in the Twin Cities.
On the flip-side, during every raid on activist spaces in the last 36 hours, Fox News has been conveniently on the scene before any other media—indy or corporate—even knew anything had happened yet. This brings new weight to the question, “if this were state-controlled media, how would it look any different?” All of this is happening right here in the “heartland” of the United States in the immediate wake of identical behavior on the part of the Chinese state’s repression of activists as well as members of the media who cover them.
But despite this despotism, at home and abroad, we unequivocally refuse to be terrorized into silence. We will not be written out of the history books by the victors, because we have no interest in losing. The state will never be able to control our tight-knit network of equals, determined to up the ante after these many months of tireless work and preparation. We will have no idea how this will all play out until after tomorrow, but it’s a safe bet that it is worth participating in.

Who is Sarah Palin? If you really want to know.
QWB received this for posting.
This article is published for information purposes only.
QWB members would Never consider voting for this person.
Yesterday was John McCain’s 72nd birthday. If elected, he’d be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for “inexperience,” here’s who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.
Who is Sarah Palin? Here’s some basic background:
- She was elected Alaska ’s governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
- Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
- She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
- Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
- She’s doesn’t think humans are the cause of climate change.5
- She’s solidly in line with John McCain’s “Big Oil first” energy policy. She’s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
- How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7

The Obama phenomenon.
Article re-printed from Freedom Socialist, Voice of Revolutionary Feminism. August-September 2008.
Candidacy marks a turning point in U.S. race relations and a savvy move by corporate elite
Barack Obama. Crowds of everyday people flock to hear his song of change. Young people see him as the fulfillment of their multiracial ideals. Wall Street isn’t advertising it, but they back him too — with megabucks. These contradictory constituencies can’t both be satisfied. In a time of economic and political crisis, understanding what Obama’s candidacy means, and what he can and can’t deliver, is a matter of survival for workers and the poor. [Read more →]

We Almost Lost Detroit
The brilliance of McCain shines through each and every day of his pitiful life. Today he went to the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant near Monroe, Michigan (not far from Detroit) to espouse the benefits of Nuclear Energy and made the brilliant statement (regarding nuclear power): “I knew it was safe then (when he was in the Navy) … I know it’s safe now.” I can only surmise that this president wannabe fool is a total idiot when it comes to historical facts (and of course most things he says confirms this) for in 1966 the Fermi 1 reactor suffered a partial fuel meltdown! Or perhaps he wasn’t tuned into Gil Scott-Heron’s powerful song “We Almost Lost Detroit” or guess he wasn’t rapping to MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy whose first album was No NUKES!). I have pasted just a sampling of Gil Scott-Heron’s song below:
Just thirty miles from Detroit
stands a giant power station.
It ticks each night as the city sleeps
seconds from anniahlation.
But no one stopped to think about the people
or how they would survive,
and we almost lost Detroit
this time.
Though perhaps such insensitive and stupid actions are part of his repertoire considering on June 17, [Read more →]

As economic woes mount, homeless plan to vote
By Syantani Chatterjee, Reuters, Wed Jul 23, 1:17 AM ET
Single mother Mary White worked as a sales clerk until the bank foreclosed on the home she rented.
Tossed out on the street with her six boys, she lost her deposit and her job. Now she is revved up to vote in November. “My situation is going to make me want to vote even more,” she said.
“I want to say that this should not be happening to people in America, and I am very angry and upset about it.” [Read more →]
