The Fourth Annual Transgender Lives: The Intersection of Health and Law Conference is being held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the UConn Health Center from 8:00 AM till 5 PM. This all day conference is geared towards Community, Service Providers, Medical and Legal Professionals, Trans and Gender non-conforming individuals, allies and all those interested in the Health and Law issues facing the Trans and gender non-conforming communities.

The Federal Government on more than one occasion has enacted federal regulations excluding trans folks from federal protections: the Americans with Disabilities Act, Insurance Coverage and Medicaid to name a few. And we now see the House of Representatives, the Senate and even the President supporting even more abortion restrictions on a Woman’s Right to full health care coverage and her ability to govern decisions over her body. WOMEN AND SOCIALISM FORUM!

Did you know that the fight for women’s rights was born in the late 19th century struggle for socialism? Did you know that in the first years of the first socialist revolution in the world, women gained free abortion on demand, and a commitment to free 24 hour childcare centers, as well as communal laundry and food service in order to eliminate the drudgery of housework? Did you know that they set up free hostels for youth who needed to flee oppressive family situations in order to express themselves sexually? Did you know that working women led the opening battles in some of the great revolutions of the last two centuries. Did you know that the women’s movement of the sixties fought for radical and anti-capitalist demands and for a society organized on a basis that would allow the repressive family structure to fade away. Come to a slide show about the real history of the fight for women’s rights. Marriage equality represents a seat at the table for LGBT folks-but whose table are we sitting at? And what about the rest of us who are still grasping for crumbs?

On the job, at school and on the street, queerfolk of all stripes are still some of the most oppressed in society. Queers Without Borders seeks to build a movement to flip the table over altogether. Come contribute to the discussion, and meet the faces behind the statement below:

Hartford’s World AIDS Day event will take place on December 1st, 11 AM - 12, at the Connections Drop-in Center, located at the Institute for Community Research, 146 Wyllys St, Hartford.

Hartford City Councilman Luis Cotto, will be the keynote speaker, with Connecticut’s Health Advocate, Kevin Lembo following Councilman Cottoand ending with two people living with HIV/AIDS.

At 1 PM, there will be a showing of the video “Love in a Time of HIV” one-hour documentary that takes a walk in the shoes of several people around the world living with the disease and how it impacts their relationships. “Love in a Time of HIV” reaffirms that the scourge is alive and well, but that people can maintain day-to-day normalcy with friends and family and even find love. Although there is still no cure, recent drug breakthroughs have extended the lives of many and a diagnosis is no longer necessarily a death sentence. Even in the face of the illness and an early demise, love can prevail.

Though the last TBC was back in 2006, it is an amazing conference and if you have never attended it before you have missed out on some amazing workshops, people and networking!   Sadly it conflicts with the North American Anarchist Studies Network Conference, though scheduling events each year becomes a greater and greater challenge to avoid conflicts with other events.  Probably a good thing, but it still sucks.  The link to TBC 2009 is at TranscendingBoundaries.org and definitely check their website out. TBC is being held at the DCU Conference Center and the Hilton Garden Inn in Worcester, Mass.

Some highlights from the website are: The Transcending Boundaries Conference (TBC) is for bisexual/pansexual, trans/genderqueer, intersex and polyamorous people and our allies. TBC is for and about those who do not fit into simple categories, and we couldn’t be more excited about our 6th upcoming conference! Also featuring Peterson Toscano in his play “Transfigurations”, a reading by Cecilia Tan, Workshops by Robyn Ochs, Anita Wagner, Gunner Scott and more, a Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil and reception, the Happy Hour Burlesque show, Create Your Own Workshops, an Open Mic on Friday and much more! After a year of slow work on the library collection formerly housed at Project 100, the Queer Community Library will be OPEN FOR BUSINESS beginning in November. Join us for the official opening–an open discussion on the state of the collection, continuing work, the direction we want to take it, the importance of such projects, etc etc.

Afterward we’ll have a killer costume party with food and refreshments. More info to follow; open library hours starting in November: To Be Determined.
