Dyke Lite: Chapstick “Lesbians” (and the women who don’t love them)
A caption from an article about the musician describes “pop songs with Perry cast as a sunnier Avril.” The comparison of Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry is right on target–both are poseurs. Avril has–in pop culture–conned younger generations into believing that dark eyeliner and angst define punk, and Katy’s current song (with a ripped off title) “I Kissed a Girl” is promoting pseudo-lesbianism as the real thing.
The song lyrics in question:
This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
Lost my discretion
It’s not what, I’m used to
Just wanna try you on
I’m curious for you
Caught my attentionI kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it

Music for a Multi-Issue People/Movement
“Come Out” is a piece of music written in 1966 by composer Steve Reich. This piece was written and performed at a benefit for the retrial of the “Harlem Six”, six black youths arrested for committing murder during the 1964 Harlem Riots for which only one of the six was responsible. For more info on this amazing piece see here. The Choreography Dance was added in 1982 by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Michele Anne De May. Check out more of Reich’s music exp. “Clapping Music” found on you tube, which is an attempt to write a piece of music requiring nothing more then the human body.

The Internationale
by Billy Bragg
Billy Bragg complained to Pete Seeger that the traditional lyrics to the Internationale were somewhat dated. Pete Seeger said: “why don’t you write new ones?” So Billy Bragg did. For May Day 2008 Queers Without Borders sends out to all of you this wonderful version of the Internationale. The original Internationale was first written and sung after the brutal suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871. This rallying cry sings out loud and clear for all exploited and oppressed people of the world to rise up and overthrow their masters.

A real gem.
No one really needs to say much more about this song. It still resounds today. I wanted to publish it here today because of the new 3 Strikes Law that was passed. (check out Peter’s posting over at the Undercurrent click here.) Len Chandler was born in 1935 in Akron, Ohio. He received a B.A. in Music Education from the University of Akron and a M.A. from Columbia. Chandler learned to play the guitar and played around Washington Square Park and landed a gig at the Gaslight Cafe. In the early 1960s Chandler began to be involved in the Civil Rights Movement and much of his material was related to the Black Panther Party. A thank you to Len Chandler. Check more of Chandler out on you tube. His song Beans In Your Ears should be sung by everyone no matter what age. Try it here
